>mr guy< is a lovely slice of lovers rock and somewhat overlooked when released in 1980 but it has become a firm favourite with us here at bristol archive. >pretty girl< finds roots singer joshua moses showing his softer side, it was something of a hit on the original release and makes a natural pairing with sharons tune.
both tracks were originally released as singles on bristol label shoc-wave records some thirty years ago and were given their first digital release with their well deserved inclusion on >the bristol reggae explosion 1978 ¹ 1983<. >mr guy< also made it onto the limited vinyl version of the album, but running time constraints meant there was no room for >pretty girl< something we a very pleased to rectify with this vinyl release.

quality reissue of the mega-rare blow up records release of the italo masterpiece pink footpath by loui$. originally released in 1985, this gem has become one of the most highly sought after italo disco tracks around. on the a side is magic dance which is good, but it’s the instrumental version of the track pink footpath that really gets the disco djs drooling. with its killer analogue b-line, dreamy synths and balearic guitar riffs, its easy to see why it became such an anthem at the early ibiza parties as well as a late night favourite in chicago and new york. highly recommended.

keep up! records unveils brand new signing bestboygrip complete with his debut ep fonck. those with their ears to the ground will be aware that the germany-based bestboy is well-known within the drum n bass world under a different moniker. but this is the bestboy cutting loose for a minute and kicking out some modern disco jams with one foot in the past and the other in the future. this is the sound of an 80s boogie, synthesizer, library music and b-movie obsessive. fonck is the slow-paced opener with heavy-hitting synth drums but reflective keyboard narrative. one of keep up! recordsfavourite producers architeq provides a dubby, spacey remix sounding like something luke vibert might have included on his nuggets library compilations. on the flipside the pace quickens with the flexible bassline but tight groove of copyright. the ep closes with the house-tinged cross my mind, which builds on the strong melody-lead theme of the other tracks even further with the aid of catchy synth lead and vocal hooks. the fonck ep sits comfortably next to artists such as faze action, lcd soundsystem and ilija rudman. just the way keep up! likes its modern disco. bestboygrip is aiming to expand his sound even further, this time onto the stage with a full live band. keep an eye out for roland and his crack team of musicians visiting your town.

here is the next instalment in kat records, sub-label kat45. this time sees rossoulano from the blackbeard camp, who were infamous in the early noughties with their soulful re-workings of stateside nu soul & hip hop originals into a more organic sound and championed by the like of giles peterson.
first up here we have rossoulano’s extended version of the supremes – stormy. originally produced by henry cosby in 1968, the man behind motown classics stevie wonders ‘my cherie amour’& smokey robinson & the miracles tears of a clown, stormy is one of the hidden gems from diana ross’s supremes. released on vinyl for the first time here and sounding all the mightier for it…
on the flip we have an the mysterious friends in lo places… an rnb/neo soul melter that harks back to blackbeards edit hey day and acts as a nice reminder as to why the name still rings true to many a soul aficionado.

london based label ism serves up a massive ep with three tracks from russian disco producer volta cab, all of which offer some seriously downtempo grooves. >play on< and >magic in your eyes< nail the classic sub 110bpm disco sound with its lush live instrumentation. however its the shining 80s feel of >hes a bad mutha< that is the most impressive, melding a sleazy vocal with a heart-rending combination of synths and horns. label bosses yam who? offer two remixes, with their version of >play on< a cosmic uptempo version of the original, with an ascending synth bass that elevates the original vocal to new heights. their remix of >hes a bad mutha< adds a similar amount of extra dancefloor kick, removing the originals yearning melody for something a little more forceful.

supported by tornado wallace (delusions of grandeur), pete herbert (reverso 68/dance disorder)... when jay shepheard launched retrofit in early 2010, deep house with a splash of disco was on the menu. six releases later and the quality of music hasnt faltered once. jays own work has always been the main focus on all five releases but for retrofit 6, rudys midnight machine, (who is in fact robin lee of faze action) takes to the stage alongside an appearance from shepheard (as ee_ef_ex) on remixing duties. >ecstatic love glow< kicks off the ep, diving head first into the disco and synth heavy realm that we expect from retrofit (and, for that matter, from mr lee), whose house outputs with faze action as far back as 97 speak for themselves. the intro of tip tapping hats and congas leads into a penetrating bass guitar, a riff that goes on to be cleverly mirrored by keyboards and later, by what sounds like a scratchy lakland guitar. wooden hats, sirens and a plethora of cosmic elements boogie their way around until the tracks dominant synth parades in and takes over the arrangement, striking a dramatic and smug pose at the close of each stab. the second track of >east side good living< sticks with its predecessors groove, cosmic sirens, electronic whistles and metallic drum taps yet again highlighting rudys modern disco sound

solomon s remix is already rated one of his best to date and perfectly refletcs his flair for the sub-heavy downtempo funk and club-feel. expect the cool underground clubs to have the solomun remixes running for the entire summer season 2011.

one of vahagns best friends (tiago from dfa, clearmont 56, golf channel, etc), has a residency at lisbons top club lux called trust. after attending one of these trust nights, this lisbon-based armenian musician arrived in his studio right after the club night and wrote the original material for this record in the course of a few hours. the result was so special, that soon groovement had it signed upon hearing, and contacted tiago to be the remixer for the track dedicated to him. a record with a story like this is bound to be good!

>hollywood seven< has been a dance floor weapon of mike simonettis dj sets for almost six years. its one of those tracks people come up to the booth & ask about the most. >whats that song about omaha and the hotel?< we are happy to finally answer that question with this essential release. rescued from the depths of dollar bin obscurity. the a-side here was the closing track on mike & johnnys december 2007 cult mix >albuterol<. titled >disconet dilemma< alluding to mike scoring the disconet promo 12 inch while digging in jersey on one sunny afternoon.

fennesz writes: seven stars was recorded in vienna in january 2011. i recorded and mixed the album within 3 weeks. liminal and july were existing pieces which i have reworked. (i wrote an early version of liminal in a hotel room in bali in 2010). there is also a version of liminal that i have been playing live for some time. my friend steven hess, with whom i have worked before, happened to be in vienna at the time of the sessions, so i invited him to join me in the studio. christoph amann recorded the drums using a selection of his great microphones including his amazing new josephson

did you ever hear about christian strobe? no? hardly surprising, cause its a brand new solo-project by christian schnall, one half of disco trash music (maximal electro) and spruce (dreamy shoegaze). the german guy is musically rooted in the 80ies and early 90ies and as christian strobe, he combines airy new wave pop, retro-futurism with a pinch of house. the original mix of >midnight call< is full of magic, desire and an airy atmosphere, but still a simple pop song. the nightdrive version is recommended for nightly rides with your ferrari testarossa through big city lights. the italo-disco-pop-masters from codebreaker gives the original a funky french taste and reknowned keenhouse conjured a good-feeling remix with lovley summer-piano-chords. midnight call? you could name it sunshine call! in a more and more digital environment, the warmth of the analog vhs-tape version gives you the relaxing mood you need. the placid >lonesome astronaut< completed the debut-ep and takes you to a cosmic trip though time and space. stay tuned for the upcoming full-length album called >heartworks< in autumn 2011.

our japanese dear friend hidenobu ito is definitely overwhelming and it seems almost comically out of place. from alien hydraulics to percussive steel fractals he allows to take shape within the realm of impossibility. so, what follows next on numbolic records is a stunning lesson in subtle buildup of sound design. theres a feeling of constant movement and shaky energy that means his music never quite stands still. highly resonant and rapidly-panning drum hits act like flickering fluorescent lights. the result is a heavily abstracted layering and perhaps our most sonically release to date. every sound, no matter how tiny, is endlessly tweaked and picked apart. the 12 inch ep is rounded off with 2 prickly re-interpretations. dualism turns up the fog with a super-deep captivating and yet lovingly version. while ditch comes up with a characteristic throbbing dirty techno rework. another 4 smashing tracks by hidenobu ito are added digitally as well as two bonus remixes. kai provides a dance floor-approved version and the hungarian newcomer as we said made a cartoon spaceship to the moon. big pulsating bass kicks will drive you in that particular head-space, but before accidentally killing someone in love, we suggest go get this record instead and start dance! be numbolic!

ok we can do a long text here... but lets not do that.... fantastic track by recast (aka fluxion)! a blissed-out track that is lush and jazzy! the experience of years of precision crafting dubby tech soundscapes is brought to these tracks, which are grooving house vibes executed in the melodic but quirky manner of isolee or luomo. lorca music is on remix duty here and did a great job with a clattering, skittering groove that is somewhere between 2-step and brokenbeat, the result is heavy and provides a nice alternative to the two recast versions. this is pure techno as we like it... not the banging big room techno, but techno we know from pioneers such as derrick may, carl craig, john beltran, stefan robber and the likes. no shit... this is just one of the most beautiful records we ve heard in a while.

southern california meets saturn in the first of a small series of sun ra interpretations. straight out of poobah records in pasadena, ras_g sets the bar high for this with a breathtaking version of the 1971 track >nidhamu< over a year in the making and his longest work to date its suitably fitting counter to sun ras futuristic synth revelations. bespoke cover art for each record of the series comes from stephen serrato.

mit dem wunderbar sommerlichen vocaltrack >right in the dark< erscheint nun die dritte single aus fritz kalkbrenners sensationellem debütalbum >here today gone tomorrow<, das jüngst für den kritikerpreis des echo nominiert war. auf >right in the dark< weiß der bruder von paul kalkbrenner mit seiner außergewöhnlichen stimme zu glänzen wie auf kaum einem anderen stück des albums. der song ist auch der favorit der beteiligten remixer. deren besetzung kann mit robag wruhme und henrik schwarz kaum hochkarätiger sein. robag wruhme ist zweifellos einer der männer der stunde. sein neues album auf dj kozes label pampa ist zu recht in aller munde. seine version von >right in the dark< weiß denn auch spielerisch die hohen erwartungen zu erfüllen. henrik schwarz ist seit langer zeit einer der lieblingsproduzenten von fritz kalkbrenner und der suol-crew. der berliner versteht es in seinen tracks wie kaum ein anderer, spannung aufzubauen. die gelingt ihm auch in seinem remix von >right in the dark<, der in dem moment, wenn die 4/4-kickdrum einsetzt, unter garantie jeden club der welt auseinandernimmt.

the first world unknown 12 inch kicks off with a slamming piece of prototype house from glasgows naum gabo aka jonnie wilkes from optimo and his production partner james savage. showing that a relatively low pace doesnt mean any drop in energy levels and dancefloor pump power, whop! cracks along like something from an alternate reality version of 1980’s chicago. its as easy to imagine it rocking the house at medusas or the box as it is to envision it in the present day soundtracking some kind of bizarro fetish party or a particularly intense session at berghain’s lab-oratory. this is jacking in the true sense of the word. on the flip side italian born berlin resident franz underwear ups the tempo with a stunning piece of slamming european musclebeat. shades of ibiza 88-89 pervade here, the kind of pumping, chunky synth action, teutonic vocal exhortations and vaguely menacing but ultimately benign vibe that sent thousands of potty european kids totally round the bend and changed the world of dance music forever.
